What should a Shopify free gift launch test plan cover?

Approve a gift campaign only after its eligibility, gift item, price, cart display, checkout route, and fulfillment record pass a documented set of normal and exception cases.

An acceptance test states the starting cart, the customer action, and the expected result. The purpose is to make “it works” reviewable. A successful ideal-case screenshot is useful but does not cover the customer changing their mind, entering another code, or reaching payment through another route.

What should the test record contain?

Start with the offer contract: qualifying purchase, gift SKU, quantity cap, timing, insertion or choice method, and removal policy. Add theme/cart details, required plan, and the configuration version. Give each case an expected result before running it.

For implementation context, Monk Commerce documents auto-add settings and removal behavior. Use those to identify relevant configuration checks, then verify the chosen implementation on the actual store.

Which cases form a practical starting matrix?

How should you prioritize failures?

Treat incorrect charges, wrong gift quantities, and an unavailable promised item as release decisions requiring resolution. A visual problem also matters when it changes what the shopper understands or hides a necessary action. Define your own severity and approval owner rather than relying on a universal score.

Separate a configuration mismatch from an implementation defect. If the offer is set to require more spend than the banner states, both the rule and copy need review. If the cart is correct but the drawer is stale, preserve the reproduction for the responsible implementer.

How should combinations and fulfillment be checked?

Use Shopify’s combination documentation to identify the relevant discount classes and constraints. Test the actual active combinations, not every theoretical promotion. Inspect gift pricing separately from the total order amount.

Then use the fulfillment workflow to confirm the order and warehouse handoff. The final acceptance record should cover both the online promise and its operational execution. Mark a test as unresolved if the warehouse has not reviewed it; do not substitute a storefront screenshot.

What should be retained after approval?

Keep the configuration, representative orders, observed results, unresolved limitations, and rollback instructions together. Assign retest triggers for theme changes, new promotions, gift replacements, and major offer edits. Do not revise the acceptance date simply because the document is reopened.

For ordinary operation, connect this checklist to stock monitoring and campaign scheduling. A release record is most useful when later support reports can be compared with a known tested journey.

Limits of this guide

This is a proposed acceptance framework. No campaign tests or merchant-system checks were performed for the publication. It is not a certification, exhaustive compatibility suite, or guarantee against production failures. Expand the matrix for the specific theme, plan, cart applications, currencies, customer conditions, and fulfillment integrations involved.

Frequently asked questions

Must every campaign use the same number of test cases?
No. Cover each relevant rule boundary, route, dependency, and exception. A simple product-triggered sample and a multi-tier checkout selector need different coverage.
