How should you design tiered free gifts on Shopify?

Decide whether higher tiers accumulate gifts or replace lower rewards, then define non-overlapping boundaries and test both upward and downward cart changes.

A tier is a reward level tied to an eligibility boundary. The central design choice is whether reaching a higher level adds a reward or replaces the earlier one. Do not let overlapping settings decide that commercial policy accidentally.

What is the difference between cumulative and replacement tiers?

For an illustrative campaign, a $70 basket earns a sample and a $120 basket earns a pouch. In a cumulative design, the higher basket earns both. In a replacement design, it earns only the pouch. The product names and amounts are test examples; no threshold or reward value is recommended universally.

Which documented tools are relevant to the decision?

Monk Commerce describes tier examples and a relevant combination control. Monk Commerce documents that overlapping same-type cart offers can display together when their combination setting is enabled, while same-type product-page offers have a different restriction. (Monk offer combinations) BOGOS describes tiered gift-with-purchase offers in its feature documentation. (BOGOS tiered gift offers) Kite’s listing also describes cart-threshold gifts and progress bars. These are workflow leads to evaluate, not a ranking or proof that all three implement your precise tier policy.

How should you configure the boundaries?

Write the minimum, maximum, and inclusivity of each tier. Distinguish “greater than $70” from “at least $70.” For a replacement design, test whether two rules can overlap and, if so, which wins. For a cumulative design, test whether each expected gift appears once and stays within its cap.

Add a cart containing excluded products so the threshold calculation is unambiguous. If multiple currencies are used, define the test amounts for each relevant market rather than assuming identical displayed numbers represent the same eligibility.

What should the progress bar communicate?

Choose the next relevant reward and make the remaining-spend message use the same basis as the offer rules. A cumulative campaign should not imply that the earlier gift will disappear. A replacement campaign should not suggest the customer will keep every reward unless that is actually true.

Test a shopper who chooses a lower-tier gift and then earns the higher level. Decide whether their selection persists, is replaced, or needs another action. Also test the reverse path after reducing the cart. These transitions often determine whether the offer feels coherent.

How should you control the campaign’s operating cost?

Estimate gift consumption by tier, including orders that already meet the highest boundary. Use the actual cumulative reward cost when rewards stack. Keep a simpler fallback offer ready in case stock or integration limits make the full ladder impractical.

Use the promotion margin guide for scenario design and the gift-choice guide when each tier contains several options.

Limits of this guide

No multi-tier offer was installed or tested. The vendor documents support the described controls and feature scope, not identical tier precedence or performance. App combination settings, discount combinations, and product-page versus cart behavior can differ. The numerical examples are proposed tests, not optimized thresholds.

Frequently asked questions

Should a higher tier always include all lower-tier gifts?
That is a campaign decision. Cumulative and replacement tiers have different costs and customer journeys; choose one and test it explicitly.
