Why does a Shopify free gift not appear in the cart drawer?

Check whether the gift exists in the actual cart before changing the offer: a missing line, an undiscounted line, and a stale cart drawer are different failures.

A cart drawer is the small cart view opened over the shopping page. It is a presentation of the cart, not sufficient evidence of every underlying change. A useful diagnosis starts with one reproducible action and a record of what was expected to happen.

Which failure are you actually seeing?

Monk Commerce documents a rendering-related setting. Monk Commerce’s auto-add documentation describes an Auto Refresh option for themes that lack a cart listener. (Monk automatic gift setup) This is one possible cause to investigate, not an instruction to change every store’s refresh behavior.

ObservationFirst questionNext evidence to collect
No gift anywhereDid the eligibility rule match?Offer settings and qualifying cart
Gift in checkout, absent in drawerDid the drawer update after the mutation?Cart state and refresh sequence
Gift present but paidDid the intended discount apply?Checkout discount allocation
Gift returns after removalIs opt-out intentionally disabled?Gift behavior settings
Removed gift still shownIs the visible state stale?State before and after refresh

The sequence matters. Do not debug the drawer’s markup when the gift was never added. Do not change eligibility when the correct item already appears in checkout. Ask the developer to inspect the documented cart operations if the visible states disagree.

How should you create a minimal reproduction?

Begin with an empty cart and one active offer. Add the exact qualifying variant from a normal product page. Record whether the drawer opens, whether the gift appears, and whether refreshing changes it. Next repeat through the route that failed, such as a quick-add control or an upsell button.

Write down theme version, cart app, gift app, offer identifier, browser, and relevant steps. Avoid including customer personal data in a support example. A short sequence that produces the same failure twice is more useful than a collection of unrelated screenshots.

What should be checked when removal looks broken?

Monk’s removal guide notes that a disabled refresh path can leave gift removal out of date on screen. (Monk automatic gift removal)

Check whether the qualifying product is still present, whether the gift has actually been removed, and which component redraws the drawer. Look for a mismatch between the event the promotion listens for and the action used by the cart UI. This is a diagnostic hypothesis for the implementer to validate; it is not an established explanation of your store’s behavior.

How can you avoid introducing another problem during the fix?

Change one setting or integration path at a time and rerun the original reproduction. Include regression cases for adding an ordinary product, changing quantities, removing the trigger, and reaching checkout. Confirm that a fix does not create repeated additions or unexpected page reloads.

Document the cause once it is demonstrated. “Refreshing fixed it” is an observation; “the drawer did not redraw after the gift mutation” needs supporting evidence. Keep the implementation record with the automatic addition acceptance tests so later theme changes can be checked against the same journey.

Limits of this guide

This is a diagnostic sequence, not a diagnosis of a particular storefront. No browser console, network trace, or theme code was inspected for a merchant. App events, cart APIs, and update mechanisms vary. The documented refresh settings are specific examples and do not guarantee a universal fix or compatibility with another cart application.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace the cart drawer to fix a missing gift?
First reproduce the failure and inspect the cart state. Replacing the drawer before isolating insertion, discounting, or rendering can hide the cause and introduce more changes.
